I have - some people say suffer from, which I do - cerebral palsy, and I have experienced bullying because of my handicap/disability. I attended a special primary school for disabled children, and my parents persuaded the education authority to allow me to attend a secondary school for able-bodied children. I got on well with most of the other children, and made friends. However, there was a bullying element.
My life became a nightmare. Because of my shaking hands and twitchy face, I was called “jittery” and “twitchy-face” which was not pleasant. The boys always wanted to annoy and pick fights - they knew that they could always win! When I joined the boy-scouts, I was ridiculed because I could not tie knots because of my cerebral palsy - and my shaking hands. I left the scouts because I could not suffer the insults any longer.
My parents were not pleased at me. I did not tell them the reason that I left, and they were angry at me. I decided not to let it get me down, and to stand-up to the bullies and stand-up and fight their intimidation which resulted in fights - where I always came off worst - and I don’t recommend that. I always came off worst, and that was years ago when I was young. The bullying also occurs in the workplace. Any time, any place, anywhere that bullying is experienced - report it!
