Volunteer Journal - Chapter 4 |

One of the four gifts from being a volunteer, Friendship, something you can never buy but only treasure.
You lot must wonder who the girl I was talking about all this time. She is… second thought I not saying. You want to know who is she… sorry no name calling. She is a person that helps and guides me whenever I needed help. She is my good friend and always will be. This is my gift of Friendship. How about you? You can have the same gift as me, only if you give it a try, your decision.
My gifts don’t end here; yeah, I know I am greedy!
While I was organizing the Christmas Party I was helping the centre doing other things. By the way I was very busy organizing the Christmas so I didn’t help the centre much. It very difficult to believe, a very lazy boy is willing to spend his free time helping other people, even I don’t believe it myself. Back then before I become a voluntary, I did not understand the need of other people. I thought they got carers and families, so they do not need us to visit them, now I see differently. It begins with the volunteers coordinate asking me:
‘Do you want to help two elderly to do interpreting? They do not know any English but they know Cantonese.’
I didn’t want to do it, yup; I am very lazy, it’s normal for anyone… right? I guess not but I am always nosey, and sometime put it somewhere it don’t belong. I really need to ask what I have to do. The volunteer coordinate said:
‘All you need to do is interpret English to Cantonese to the elderly and interpret Cantonese to English to person that you will talk to.’
I thought it was easy… yup I am very cocky. Since I got time I decide to help out. That was my first time working with elderly and it change my view on elderly needs.
