Volunteer Journal - Chapter 5 Create new blog
I still do not understand something. I was thinking:

‘Where are the carers we always talk about? Where are the families when they are needed?’

Now I understand carers are not they 24/7, the carers are not always they when they need it but volunteers are because volunteers are not one person; it is a group of people. Some family’s members do care about and visit them but some family don’t visit them for months. This sometime makes the elderly thinks they are useless; no one care about them; isolated and lonely but volunteers can show they are wrong. You, as a volunteer can make a big difference just by seeing them. By seeing them you can make them happy and put a smile on their face. This will be one of the greatest things that you can give to someone and you will feel satisfaction. What else can you gives.

This is one of the four gifts from being a volunteer, Fulfilment, something you can never buy but only treasure.

I still remember the time I went to visit an elderly, a note I do not know him or nether he know me. I was scared that he does not welcome me and kick me out or slam the door at my beautiful face!. The interesting thing is none of slamming, kicking or not answering happened, I must be dreaming. He was very happy to see me… you not reading it wrong, surprised? Me to… he was very joyful to see me. I already put a smile on someone face before I enter. Before he open the door he ask for my name. When I answered, he said:

‘COME IN!!! COME IN!!! Take a sit. Do you like anything to eat or drink?’

I have not even sit down, he offer me this and that. By the look of it he very really likes me. I was so happy that he welcomes me, by the way he speak Cantonese. We talk for a few minutes and then he rushed to his photo albums then explains his families’ members. You should have seen his face; he is very joyful and so happy to talk to me. I do not have to do anything, by being there it can make someone happy and I do not need any special skill. All I need to do is sit, talked and listen. This is my gift of Fulfilment. How about you? You can have the some gift as me, only if you give it a try, your decision.

Ahh I love the bit about how you don't have to have any special skills or even do anything really just to make someone happy! Volunteering is great!
Looking forward to the next chapter...
