Volunteer Journal - Chapter 7 Create new blog
Everyone in CMHA is very kind. I still remember one time I spilled of hot water on the table, one of the staff come up to me… guess what she said… she said are you ok, did any hot water spilled on you. They worry about my safety of volunteers more then anything. They are caring and kind-hearted people, what more can you asked form them. For your note, the person that cared about me is the girl I mention early… remembered? The one always bully me.

Working with people with metal health is very difficult because what you say and do can affect them. If you think you might say or do something that will offend the clients do not worries, that kind of mistake normally happen for newcomer. Also don’t think if you made a mistake the staff will not let you be a volunteer. I made a lot of mistakes; keep on saying the wrong things at the beginning, you don’t see flying over the roof or throw out of the window. When you make mistake they will let you know and then you can correct the mistake.

Every once week the centre have a day activity for the clients and all volunteers are welcome to join. The activities include gardening, art, potty, dancing, singing, badminton and monopoly? Yes, you reading it right it really monopoly. Believe me I very surprise when first heard it:

‘Monopoly!!! You mean the board game Monopoly, where you roll the dice then move the shoe and people fight to be the dog. Is it the game that you can be richer then my friends?’

Sometime on a nice day in summer we have picnic in the park or go to the beach… yup, you have read it right again, the beach where they are sand, sea and sun. You can lay on the sand, swim in the sea and get sun burn… oops that for me.

This is one of the four gifts from being a volunteer, Enjoyment, something you can never buy but only treasure.

I really like the idea of the 4 gifts, I think it is a really beautiful idea, which really brings to life the two way nature of volunteering.
