This is one of the four gifts from being a volunteer, Happiness, something you can never buy but only treasure.
When I first accept this voluntary work, I was thinking to do this one off. When I first met her, she was very happy and excited to see me even we do not know each other. Is this what people call happiness? I think so. I start do painting with her on the first day and she was in joy doing it and wants to continue to do more painting. She not only happy to do painting she was happy to see me because I can speak Cantonese and communicate with her. A very simple skill can motivate a person to enjoy herself and why should I stop helping her. Every week, I only see her once a week, she go home, tell her daughter how she enjoy the day and how happy she is. One day her daughter come to the centre and told me that she was very happy to see and talk to me. I was very surprise, with my Cantonese speaking skill I could encourage a disable people to enjoy her life and be happy. Do you know how happy I was… very happy because I was needed. This is my gift of Happiness. How about you? You can have the some gift as me, only if you give it a try, your decision.
I had shown you my four gifts. Don’t stop reading here, continue and see how I feel.
This is my four gifts that I gain while I am a volunteer, and I still getting them now.
People need us volunteer to help them and with our skills you can help them. Just visit them can make them happy already. No matter how old there are, what type of background or what kind of disabilities their have, no one have the right to say:
‘They are too old and what is the point taking care for them if they do not have long to live’
They have as much priority as all of us to live. All they need is our support and encouragement.
Once in a while I think what if didn’t go to the badminton competition. What if I didn’t become a volunteer, how much longer it will take for Leonard Cheshire to find a Cantonese speaker or will they every find one? Will the Chinese lady find happiness?
If I didn’t know about CMHA will I have as much enjoyment as before?
If I didn’t become a volunteer in Camden Chinese Community Centre, will I ever know Leonard Cheshire and CMHA exist? Will ever have fulfilment in life and friendship that I had before?
They are many paths in life but it depending which one you take. I had chosen my path. Which path will you choose?
My story does not end here, it will continue and it will never end. This world is full of surprises. Who knows, we might bump into each other one day and this time it will be your turn to share your volunteer life.
