The Sri Lanka Charity Challenge - Sept 25th - October 4th 2009 Create new blog
The Sri Lanka Charity Challenge - Sept 25th - October 4th 2009 For a small island Sri Lanka offers a variety of wonderful places to explore from the magnificent coastline and beaches to the tea plantations and ancient villages in the hills. You will discover a land steeped in history and blessed with near-deserted sandy beaches, lush rainforests and a welcoming people. From the dramatic mountain-top fortress of Sigiriya and the former capital Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka boasts a rich cultural heritage.

This is a 10 day trip of a lifetime to an island rich in wildlife and scenic beauty. You will trek to the summit of Adam's Peak to see the magnificent mountain scenery, enjoy a 2 day break in Kandy enjoying the peace and tranquility of this quaint mountain town and return to Unawatuna to spend 3 days undertaking community work; helping local people to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami.

Community Project - An opportunity to make a difference!

During the challenge you will spend 3 days assisting the local community in the Unawatuna region rebuild their lives in the wake of the terrible 2004 tsunami. Working alongside local people you will either be helping to renovate and refurbish community buildings and houses, will spend time teaching and helping out at a local school for deaf and blind children or will undertake other general environmental works.

Three Day Trek

The expedition will also involve a 3 day trek; the highlight of which will be an overnight camp at the summit of Adam's Peak, a mountain so-called because 'Sri Pada' as it is locally known may be translated roughly as "the sacred foot" which refers to the footprint-shaped mark at the summit, believed by Buddhists to be that of the Buddha. Other traditions assert that it is the footprint of Adam, left by his first entrance into the world.

Beautiful Kandy

There will also be a trip to Kandy which offers the opportunity to take some time to stroll around Kandy Lake...visit the Temple of the Tooth...or enjoy an afternoon stroll around the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya. Nestled in hill country this quaint town exudes tranquillity and peacefulness and will give everyone the opportunity to gather their strength for the final part of this 10 day challenge.

Thank you!

One of the things we hope you will take away from your Sri Lanka Challenge is a sense of fulfilment at having made a difference to the lives of many local people. And we know that given the opportunities for community project work and socialising with others in your party, you will make friendships that will last a lifetime!
