The 2006 Screen Nation Awards brought film, TV and sports starts together in a glittering ceremony at London's Hilton Hotel on 10th October 2006.  The event was broadcast on the Channel.

Away from the razzmatazz, we caught up with some of the award winners and nominees for exclusive interviews in which they talked about their aspirations for black film making and gave us their perspective on the industry in the UK and the USA.



Menelik Shabazz
Menelik Shabazz
One of the first black filmmakers to score mainstream success in the UK, Menelik Shabazz, the director of Burning An Illusion is also the publisher and editor of Black Filmmaker (bfm) magazine.






Kara Miller
Kara Miller
Writer/Director Kara Miller won the Emerging Talent award to great applause. Her films have played at major festivals across the world and she says she tries to 'entertain and inspire'.  She talks of the many opportunities that are out their for aspiring black talent. 






Thandie Newton
Thandie Newton
One of the top awards of the night, Female Performance in Film, went to Thandie Newton for her stunning work in Crash. We caught up with her backstage at the awards to get her reaction to the night's events and to the progress that's been made in black film making.






Noel Clarke
Noel Clarke
Another popular award winner was actor and writer Noel Clarke for Kidulthood. He talks about the film's themes and relevance to young people around the world.  His award was for Achievement in Screenwriting for Film/TV, and he was also nominated in the Male Performance in Film category.






Claire-Hope Ashitey
Claire-Hope Ashitey
Claire-Hope Ashitey is a young actress making an impact with highly rated performances in Shooting Dogs and Children of Men. She was a nominee for the Emerging Talent award, and talks of opportunities for actresses here and America.
