Some of this year's nominees for the Exceptional People in Camden Awards 2006 and why they were nominated:
 Drew Jensen Drew Jensen
Category: Exceptional Contribution to Arts & Culture
Since starting Upbeat four years ago, Drew Jensen has been a force for positive change in Camden.
In his own words, the Upbeat initiative “aims to embrace and develop the musical talent and creativity of individuals experiencing mental health issues”.
Through the use of musical activities, social interaction and exciting performance opportunities, Drew provides people living with metal health issues an improved quality of life and support with recovery.
Lately, Upbeat has expanded to include musical development workshops as well as providing rehearsal space for bands, dancers and other performers.
 Samina Dewan Samina Dewan
Category: Exceptional Contribution to Arts & Culture
Samina is the chair and backbone of Camden's Bangladesh Mela. Under her guidance, the Mela has developed from a small community initiative into a large annual event held in Regents Park.
Samina has promoted and supported younger members of the community to showcase their own activities, worked with The Metropolitan Police to ensure that the Mela is a safe event for everyone and set up new funding for a range of arts and crafts projects by Bangladeshi women.
Without her support the Mela Committee wouldn't be able commit to their overall ambition - to promote Bangladesh’s rich cultural tradition not only to Camden's Bangladeshi community but also to London as a whole.
 Sean Canavan Sean Canavan
Category: Exceptional Contribution to the Local Environment
If you think Camden is looking nicer these days, you can thank a man who’s never even seen it.
Sean Canavan is blind. But since he moved to Camden in 2000 his work has completely transformed his entire street. At his own expense he has planted flowerbeds throughout the length of his road and has personally maintained them ever since. As a result, vandalism and littering are down, and pride in our neighbourhood has never been higher.
