These films show the value of providing support through mentoring to people who are coming out of prison and trying to go straight.
Emily and Michael
The first programme follows Emily, a part time model, and Michael, who has a criminal record for violent robbery, as Emily takes on the role of mentoring him for life on the outside.
Michael out of his comfort zone She does this by exposing him to environments outside his own patch of south London. Among other things, a weekend’s trekking expedition in rugged countryside is one way of introducing him to new activities and showing him what he’s capable of.
His response is mixed. He’s determined to stay clean, but at the same time his anger at a ‘system’ that’s failed him and a father who abandoned him makes him want to resist change.
Emily helps get him accommodation and counselling, and shows him the possibilities of a better life. As Michael gains new experiences, Emily too turns her experience of mentoring to good effect, going on to study a criminal psychology degree.
Greg, Carla and Michael
In the second programme we meet Greg, Carla and Michael. Greg is a criminal defence lawyer. Carla is a recovering drug addict and was in prison for theft. Michael is a football hooligan who has recently come our of prison.
Michael gaining confidence The film follows Greg as he tries to get Carla and Michael on the straight and narrow. He’s turned from lawyer to mentor to the two ex-offenders.
Greg becomes a father figure to Michael, keeping him occupied and out of trouble. Greg's interest in Michael adds a positive note to his new life. Greg help him get back into his only passion - landscape gardening and rebuilds his confidence for life on the outside.
Greg also helps Carla find a more stable life. He acts as a pillar as she tries to kick her drugs habit and surround herself with friends who'll support her. He's there for Carla to contact as she manages to rehabilitate herself.
