29/11/06 - Camden Volunteering

Supported by an advertising campaign, digital TV station Community Channel and Volunteer Centre Camden are hosting an open day to promote volunteering to people in the Camden area on Thursday, 7th December at the Surma Centre in London, NW1.

Called Camden Volunteer Day, this free event encourages local people from all backgrounds, qualifications and physical abilities to volunteer. It runs from 1pm to 4pm at the centre in Robert Street.

The day is backed by extensive distribution of thousands of leaflets to community centres and GP surgeries in the Camden area and advertising on over 300 London buses. The clean and simple creative consists of images of raised hands alongside the strap line: “Volunteering. Anyone can lend a hand”, was donated pro-bono from ad agencies Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe (RKCR) and Y&R.

Organisations that will be at this volunteering ‘taster’ day include Scope, Mencap, Volunteer Reading Help, Timebank, Time Banks UK and the Volunteer Centre Camden.

Leading up to the day, Community Channel also sponsored the Exceptional Contribution to the Arts and Culture Award at the EPICs (Exceptional People in Camden) ceremony on Wednesday 29th November. TV presenter and ex paralympian Ade Adepitan MBE presented the award on behalf of Community Channel. The sponsorship was used to encourage people down to the event at the Surma Centre.

Hayley Watts, Director of Volunteer Centre Camden, said: “We’re delighted to be running this campaign in conjunction with Community Channel. We hope the advertising campaign will entice people down to the open day and inspire people to volunteer and get involved in their local community.”

Community Channel is also running a week’s worth of volunteering programming to celebrate International Volunteering Day on Tuesday 5th December. Every night - Monday 4th to Sunday 10th December from 7.30pm - the channel will be showing a range of programming from The Jon Snow Interviews to V for Volunteer.
