Tsunami Portraits

when is this on?

This isn't scheduled anytime soon.

Photographer Tim Hetherington recorded the devastation of the Tsunami in Banda Aceh in 2004.

Now, two years later he travels to Sri Lanka to explore how people affected by the disaster are coping with their loss.

Drama workshop
Drama and self expression
His photographic portraiture takes him on a journey into communities to capture signs of how ordinary people - young and old - are picking up the pieces of their lives.

In his work he tries to 'photograph a feeling' that captures what those affected by the tsunami have been through.  All of them are individual with their own experiences which shine through their portraits.

His work also takes him to drama workshops which are used to help children express some of their fears and feelings and to bring out the trauma that is often hidden deep inside.

Masks too are often a sign of having one face on the outside, but a different one on the inside.

Explaining the portrait
While Tim's video and photography in 2004 showed the destruction wrought by the tsunami, this film is about charting the next stages in a collaborative process of healing.

With Tim capturing the moment and explaining his way of working, this film shows the power of photography to provide a different insight into the trauma suffered by tens of thousands of Sri Lankans.
