The meaning

The central theme of New Year is renewal. The old year recedes with past misfortunes and past wrongs, and New Year heralds the chance of a fresh start. Socially it signifies reunion and reconciliation, the end of strife and the renewal of harmony.

A key proverb of the Chinese New Year of the Pig is ‘better to give than to receive’ – but we can really get something back too.

Community Channel is encouraging people to give time, get involved and make a difference.

You’ll find there’s so much more to life and so many ways you could benefit when you volunteer.

Year of the Pig
Better to Receive

• Lend a hand to help others
• Develop your skills and interests
• Be part of the community
• Experience new things
• Make new friends
• Have fun

Why should you give more?

People get as much out of volunteering as they put in. Whatever your age, ability or background, getting involved will make a difference to everyone’s life -including your own.

You’ll learn new skills and develop existing talents and volunteering helps us all to work as a team. It also shows employers you can get on with people and handle responsibility.

How can you give more?

Give whatever time you can spare and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve. Even an hour a week can make a huge difference.

Whatever your background, qualifications or physical abilities, you can do your part to make your community a better place.

Anyone can volunteer because all of us have abilities and qualities that are useful in some way.

Volunteering won’t affect your benefits, but you need to inform your local Jobcentre Plus

Everyone’s different but whichever benefit you receive, you should always inform your Jobcentre Plus that you’re doing voluntary work.
