Ken Moc's Story
”I used to think volunteering was a waste of time. But helping people in need has changed my life forever and has led me down a path I could never have imagined. It is an honour to serve my local community”
Ken Moc, aged 25, has a learning disability. He is a volunteer at the Camden Chinese Community Centre where he works with older people. His skills are much in demand and on a day-to-day basis Ken may find himself translating from English into Cantonese, going with older people to visit the doctor and serving a traditional Chinese meal for lunch
“Some families aren’t able to care for their older relatives. This sometimes makes older people feel they are useless and that no one cares. That’s where volunteers come in.
You can make a big difference just by seeing them - you can make them smile, feel happy and it really helps them and their family. This is one of the greatest things you can give to someone and you will feel great satisfaction."
Ken believes “The four gifts of volunteering are Friendship, Fulfilment, Enjoyment and Happiness. These are things you can never buy but only treasure”.
Ivy She's Story
I am a freshly graduated designer and have been working on a few freelance projects for one of my clients Dragon Page who also run a few projects for and in support of many charities. They needed someone to help so this is how I became a volunteer – simple.
My main role is to teach young children about Chinese culture, especially those who are British-born Chinese. We help them find out about China and Chinese culture. I also volunteer for a Chinese charity school in Central London teaching Chinese as a second language.
I was introduced to Community Channel through Julius at Dragon Page. They needed help to ensure that Chinese culture was appropriately reflected in all the advertising produced for a new campaign incorporating the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Pig.
So I now also volunteer and provide consultation and advice to Community Channel in the design of the advertising concepts. As you can see on these pages, the final concepts and messages are used in the new campaign for Give More Get More Volunteer.
Working with the designer and project manager at Ogilvy 141 (who are also volunteering their time and expertise), is also very good for me. It gives me a good insight into how an advertising agency works and I get lots of experience back. I also know from giving my time to Community Channel that they get input which helps them to get things right.
I have also discovered that there are many charities and communities in the UK helping people with different needs everyday, and there are many ways that we can help them.
Plus being a volunteer has benefits I had not realized. I know more people, go out more and it makes me feel very contented and happy. I really enjoy helping young people, as well as other people of all ages and backgrounds.
All of these are good memories and have added much colour in my life!
