The series is funded by a Wellcome Trust grant awarded to the Channel’s sister company Media Trust Productions. Jane Stephenson, Media Trust Production’s Creative Director, led the bid and will executive produce the five-part series. Confirmed directors for the series so far include Paul Wu.

In addition, the Channel can also announce that it is to broadcast a 3x30 minute series for the Citizenship Foundation called Giving Nation Challenge (working title). The series will follow three teams of year 9 pupils in three very different schools, as they strive to set up successful social enterprises to help local charities. The chosen teams will be decided by a panel in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style pitching process.

The series will move between the three schools to follow the teams’ progress as they are set the challenge of raising money and recruiting volunteers over a five week period. Media Trust Production’s Jane Stephenson will again executive produce. Vanessa Hudson, Emma Jessop and Amanda Burrell will direct.

Caroline Hurren, Head of Public Engagement Development Group at the Wellcome Trust, comments: "The Wellcome Trust is delighted to be funding this series of five programmes for Community Channel. The films will enable the wider public to explore the devastation of living with illnesses, such as leukaemia, in fitting with our aim of increasing public awareness of health and biomedical science.  We are more than confident that Media Trust Productions will do a fantastic job in making this worthwhile series."

Terry Silvers, Giving Nation Team Leader at the Citizenship Foundation said: “We’re in no doubt that this year’s Giving Nation Challenge will be a very inspiring project for other young people around the country and we look forward to seeing it on Community Channel. Media Trust Productions understood the concept of the Giving Nation Challenge straight away and we’re sure they will produce an entertaining and inspiring TV programme.”

Ends.
