Paul Wu, Film Maker

Paul Wu
Paul Wu - Film maker
Born in Scotland in the year of the dragon,  Paul Wu has been a professional dancer, journalist and writer and is now a film-maker working on documentary and drama projects for the Media Trust and the BBC amongst others.

1. Why did you become a film maker?

To meet people, go places and tell stories that might make a difference

2. What is your current project  Lai See about?

Lai See means red envelope in Cantonese Chinese and the film is about how a self-absorbed man receives messages in these red envelopes which encourage him to change his life for the better through volunteering. At its core it's about how looking beyond your own immediate needs and desires can open up a whole world of opportunity.

3. What was the best and worst aspects of working on Lai See?

The best part of "Lai See" was working with such a great team of people. It really was a collaborative effort and it was fantastic to see how everyone from production staff to crew and actors pulled together to bring the story to life.  The worst part?   Hmmm, that we couldn't keep going and make a full-length feature film!

4. Which films inspired you in the making of Lai See?

I love the surreal artistry and cinematography of the film "Delicatessen" and the tongue-in-cheek humour of "Kung Fu Hustle" but in "Lai See" there are also nods to all the 70s Hong Kong Kung Fu movies I was addicted to as a kid and cheesy Cantopop Karaoke videos I've been forced to watch.

5. What is the one message that people watching your film Lai See should take away with them?

You'll get out of life, whatever you put into it - so helping others can really enrich your own life.
