This programme goes to the heart of the Amazon forest and gives a unique insight into the long struggle for survival by the native Kaapor people.

In what is designated a conflict zone the Kaapor have been fighting for years to maintain their ancestral lands from moves that would destroy their way of life.

Returning to their home

In 1946 the Kaapor Indians lived on 500,000 hectares of ancestral land which the government had marked out for them.

Since then, illegal loggers and land speculators have encroached on their land and started to destroy the forest which provided their homes, food and culture.

After organising themselves and staging protests against government authorities, the federal police were finally sent in to remove those involved in illegally working the Kaapor lands.

Living off the forest

As one of their chiefs, Waldemir Kaapor explains how it has given them a new permanent home in which to preserve their ancient culture. Six families have moved into the village and the forest continues to provide all their food and medicines.

The story of the Kaapors is a rare social and environmental success story.
