18/04/07 - Think Green

Press release: 18th April 2007

It couldn’t be a better script if Spielberg had written it himself. Picture this; Tom Hanks running the show, Leonardo DiCaprio on a planet saving mission, Will Ferrell starring as President Bush, Cheryl Crow cawing old songs, Jack Black praising King Kong on his environmentally friendly habits, and Diane Keaton providing nothing but glamour…

Surely this is all in the name of the ‘green’ Academy Awards? Er, no, it’s for a Natural Resources Defence Council fundraiser featuring in Think Green; the first in a 40-part lifestyle eco series on Community Channel, starting on 10th May at 9am, 3pm and 9pm on Sky and Virgin TV (and repeats at 8.30am (Sky, Virgin TV and Freeview), 2.30pm, 8.30pm (Sky and Virgin TV)).

Hollywood star, Leonardo DiCaprio leads the way when it comes to saving the planet: “I have my own foundation to support environmental issues. I try to get involved in all walks of life. I have changed my home to be more environmentally friendly. My whole family drives hybrid cars.”

In line with Community Channel’s Environmental Month in May, Think Green looks at projects all over the world hoping to raise awareness of what is required to reduce the effects of global warming and how organisations and individuals are striving to do this. Cityscape is one such project featured, where the London based exhibition shows how urban regeneration can be radically improved for those living and working in the city. Greener office surroundings are proving to increase creativity for workers too.

Asia is a concern but they have launched an energy saving campaign within businesses called Cool Asia. Although, the project began in 2005 promoting cool business fashion, its success has led to Cambodia, China, South Korea, Thailand, The Philippines and Malaysia all joining in to enforce greener practices at work. In 2006 alone, emissions were reduced by 46,000 tonnes. Their advice for summer is “use fans and open windows – don’t use air conditioning”.

Think Green’s strap line: “The future of our fragile planet is in our hands”, is a simple but powerful statement and the series will give you plenty to contemplate.
