60 Second Interview - Waheed Khan

Director - Waheed Khan

Waheed Khan is the director of the new film UP FOR ARTS showing on the Channel.

Q: Why did you become a film maker?
WK: I became a film maker to tell stories, to travel and meet people from all walks of life, ffom a range of cultutres. As a film maker one minute you could be in a 5 star hotel and the next camping out in a jungle and interviewing witches in south africa and to be able to tell stories like that to me doesn't feel like work...film making is my life.

Q: What is your current project UP FOR ARTS about?
WK: UP FOR ARTS is about getting more people accessing arts no matter what their age, experience or background is. Its about sharing stories on how anybody can make art. All you need is passion.

Q: What was the best and worst aspects of working on UP FOR ARTS?
WK: The best was meeting people from so many diverse backgrounds. 80 men singing in a choir was very moving as was meeting people were were close to their 80's who had a passion for making films and taking photographs. That was amazing. I hope I have that zeal when I'm 80+.

Bad points. It just takes ages and ages to set up projects and as a film maker you are dieing to get out there and make magic happen so i get a little fustrated with all the management and various parties trying to agree on what we want to make and the overall message. I'm a ' can do , will do it now' kind of person. Endless meetings get me down!

Q: Which films inspired you in the making of UP FOR ARTS?
WK: No specific films really.The main ingredient for this film was colour. I was thinking of bubblegum, I wanted waves and splashes of colour, a pop feel and lots of fun so to round it up I had the idea of a circus in the back of my mind - so all these great projects come together like a circus

Q: What is the one message that people watching your film UP FOR ARTS should take away with them?
WK: The one message i have is - Make Art a part of your life. Anyone can do it , and should do it. It will make you smile, laugh and meet some amazing people and create unique work.
