Ashden Awards - UK

when is this on?

This isn't scheduled anytime soon.

The eight finalists in the 2007 Ashden Awards UK are models of how to use energy efficiently, whether you're a county council, an advice centre, a business or a primary school.

They were winners at the ceremony on 21 June attended by former US vice president Al Gore.  Their stories reflect the current desire to tackle our energy waste and each one pushes the boundaries in its own way.

The film shows the innovative work the finalists have done which made them winners.

Nottinghamshire County Council is on a drive to introduce wood pellet boilers in primary schools in the county, while Wood Energy Ltd is a company in Devon which is manufacturing these high level wood pellet boilers.

Where solar energy is concerned, Solarcentury is using its latest technology to help Transport for London reach its carbon cutting targets, and to turn housing developers on to solar energy.

The champion of wind power - Ecotricity - the brainchild of Dale Vince was recognised in this year's awards.  It has become a significant energy supplier, reaching 30,000 homes and 1,000 businesses.

Changing people's habits is all about spreading the word, and Cumbria Energy Efficiency Advice Centre has been doing just that, to try to get everyone in Cumbria to save energy.

On the business front, Enworks in Manchester was recognised for being a vital support for businesses wanting to become green.  The company keeps those in the North West up to date on best practice and new legislation.

Two schools stood out in the competition.  Woodheys Primary School in Manchester and Seaton Primary School in Devon have both made reducing energy at school - or making your own electricity as Seaton does - a top priority.

In both schools energy saving and environmental schemes transcend the classroom and help run the schools themselves in a more efficient way.
