The Programme
Our programme follows two finalists - Beeston in Leeds (Urban Community category) and Rugby (Small City/Big Town category), as they get down and dirty to impress the judges.
Weeding and watering, pruning and planting, digging and deadheading! That's the task of finalists going for gold in the most prestigious horticultural competition in Europe. This year they had to contend with one of the wettest summers on record.
Rugby
The railway station, Rugby school, a wildlife conservation park and Caldecott Park are the focus of the town's entry in Britain in Bloom. There is a storytelling tree, and children from Bilton Infants School were involved in creating a scarecrow display.
It's the first time Rugby's taken part in the national competition, and their 'secret weapon' on the big day is entertainment!
Beeston
Beeston overlooks Leeds city centre and is a very mixed area. A 'league of nations', according to Vivienne Bate, one of the leading lights of Beeston in Bloom. Beeston was astounded to be chosen to represent Yorkshire in the national competition.
The allotments where schoolchildren learn about gardening, Cross Flats Park, and the planters in Tempest Road are featured in their entry.
This year's winners in 13 categories were announced at a sparkling ceremony on 26 September in Coventry Cathedral.
