Mad for Music - Heather
Heather has chosen the song Talk by Coldplay.
“Talk sums up how you feel when you have to suffer in silence.”
Heather's Story
As a teenager, Heather struggled with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
An obsession with numbers led her to count calories and constantly monitor her weight until she was admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa.
Now 22 and in recovery, Heather recently ran a 10 km marathon in support of the mental health charity MIND.
Running reminds her ‘how incredible the human body is’. She believes the ‘main purpose in life is to talk and communicate’. The isolation she felt during her treatment is powerfully reflected in her favourite Coldplay track.
The Music
Heather and Talk Talk was released in December 2005 as the third single on the album X & Y. A song about uncertainty, loss and the breakdown of communication, Talk has sold almost 10 million copies worldwide. Lead vocalist, Chris Martin has explained the album’s title: “In mathematics, X and Y are always the answers, but in life, no one knows.”
Formed in 1996 at University College London, Coldplay were named by a friend who thought their songs ‘too depressing’. But international acclaim followed the release of the single Yellow.
Chris Martin believes passionately in the power of music for good: ‘Music is something that every human responds to. I was wondering whether certain people's policies would change if they heard certain songs.’
