Mad for Music - James

watch nowwatch now

James has chosen Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.  “It means something to me that Syd Barrett also had mental health problems.”

James's Story
While at university, James had a psychotic episode and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He’d be convinced that television commentators were talking about him, and see his name in newspaper headlines.

'Things made sense when I was ill, so it was a shock to realise that I was deluded.’ James is now in recovery and soon he hopes to set up his own band.

Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here reminds James of his time in a psychiatric hospital and how his family wished he were at home with them. The lyrics ‘We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl’ confirms James’s view that everyone is in some sense ‘lost’ in the world.

The Music
Pink Floyd rose to international prominence in the early 1970s. Released in 1975, the title track of the album Wish You Were Here was ranked number 316 on Rolling Stone's 1994 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.  It partly refers to former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett, whose erratic behavior led to him being dropped by the band.

As they were recording the song, Syd unexpectedly appeared in the studio and wandered around muttering to himself. As he had lost his hair and gained weight the other band members took a while to recognize him, but then they were profoundly affected by the encounter.
