Oxygen is a film which visits four parts of the world – Chad, Brazil, Tanzania and Honduras – and looks at different types of work that are reducing poverty, and helping those caught up in conflict.  Starts broadcasting on Thurs 6 Dec. @ 7pm

Life in the Camps in Chad
Conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan has led to a humanitarian disaster on both sides of the border with Chad.  It’s forced an estimated 2 million people from their homes.

They are now living in camps set up on both sides of the border.  Desperate conditions are shown in Habile Camp and in Gassire Camp where Oxfam provides vital clean water to tens of thousands of people who have lost everything.

A Thriving Community in Brazil
This films tells how Neide de Jesus Carvalho and members of her community have struggled for six years to establish themselves legally and build their own community with the help of Oxfam's partner organisation, FAMCC.

More than 100 additional homes are planned, followed by electricity and water and schools for their children. It’s the first time this community has had the opportunity to build homes out of brick rather than materials which collapse in the rains.

Visiting the Masaai in Tanzania
Actor Bill Nighy sees how aid is being used among the Masaai communities in Tanzania.   He meets women in Engaresero Village whose lives have been changed economically and socially by the setting up a grain bank.

In Malambo Village establishing a jewellery business has given another group of women business skills, greater independence and status in their community.  The primary school in Malambo is flourishing giving the next generation a better chance of  lifting themselves out of poverty.

Improving Food Production in Honduras
Introducing new food production techniques is changing lives in some of the poorest communities of western Honduras.  Small plots are being turned into vegetable gardens enabling farmers to both feed themselves and grow enough to generate an income.

Farmers’ lives are being improved within 18 months giving families more control over their lives and improving living conditions.

The best example of a successful farmers group in Honduras is COMUCAP, a coffee producers group which Oxfam helped with a credit programme to enable them to buy land and set up a coffee production and export organisation.

Growing your own in Honduras
Honduras spends $1.5m each year on food aid to families who have no means of producing crops.  This money could be  invested in setting up small scale producers who would become self sufficient in food.
