More Than Food ...
Honduras in Central America has suffered its share of disasters including devastation during a massive hurricane in 1998. It has also suffered economic crises.
Its rural communities are some of its poorest but despite a hard life there are now ways for people in isolated areas to build a livelihood despite the country’s poor economic record.
They are helped by local organisations who provide help to start up sustainable income generating projects.
One shining example is a coffee cooperative called COMUCAP which has been growing for 10 years and now employs 250 women.
With Oxfam’s help and a credit scheme, women like Marlene Contreras were able to buy land to start the cooperative.
Now, it's an international business exporting coffee and other produce worldwide.
Since it started, the cooperative has helped this group of women to earn an income. But more importantly, it has empowered them to become more independent, to contribute to their families and – where there is domestic violence – to stand up for themselves.
Self help schemes in rural Honduras As Josefina, Dolores and others testify, it’s not only changing their own lives but that of their children as well. By improving their own economic circumstances, their children are healthier, have a better diet and the prospect of an education.
Most of all, schemes like COMUCAP have given women the self esteem to make a living and build their communities.
