QED: The Foolish Wises Ones |
Three people with autism who have exceptional talents, from being able to copy any song, a child with the drawing skills of a professional artist, and a boy who can recite dates from memory.
This is a special episode of the documentary series showing how a century ago, a French psychologist had discovered how some people with learning difficulties possess exceptional talents. He labelled them 'idiot savants'. The talents he discovered were from amazing memories to intricate drawing skills. This film follows the lives of three people in 1987, and the outstanding potential of the human mind. You will meet Noel Patterson, a 23-year-old with autism who requires constant care. He has shown amazing musical abilities since the age of five and can flawlessly reproduce almost any music he hears on the piano from Bach to Elton John. David Kidd is 28 years old with an IQ of 68. He can barely perform simple arithmetic although if you mention any random date to him, he can instantly pinpoint the day of the week it was. Stephen Wiltshire is 11 with the skills of a mature artist. He can draw remarkable freehand pictures, almost mirror images, of famous London landmarks such as St. Paul's Cathedral and King's Cross Station - all from memory. Now in 2004, Stephen is 30 and has become one of the world's most famous autistic artists. The programme will contain an update on his exciting life at the moment.
