Your News - the background

Filming Your News
Filming the hate crime story

Your News is produced by ITN and the Media Trust in consultation with Mencap and and funded by media watchdog, Ofcom.

It is a pilot programme and if successful it will develop into a series of weekly bulletins containing accessible mainstream news, entertainment and stories about people with a learning disability.

A pool of reporters with learning disabilities would then be trained to go out on location and report on stories.

There are 1.5 million people with a learning disability whose needs are currently not being met by the mainstream media.

The idea developed from a BBC report called Not seen, not heard published in 2005 detailed the experiences of people with a learning disability when accessing the media.

MT productionsThe most common complaint was that the news contained too much jargon, the stories 'jumped around', lacked context, were often depressing or firghtening and not always relevant.

Once the pilot was made, Mencap organised focus groups of people with a learning disability to test it. The programme makers are seeking feedback through other means too, such as questionnaires or via the web.

"Over the next few months we'll be working closely with Mencap and other organisations to find out what the real issues are in the learning disability community, so do send us your thoughts, both good and bad", says Media Trust creative director, Jane Stephenson.
