Ewan and Charley: Uganda

watch nowwatch now

In the second episode of this exclusive 3-part series Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman travel to northern Uganda to meet young people whose lives have been brutalised by being forced to fight in a rebel army.

On Community Channel on Sunday 4 May @ 7.30 pm. On TV and online.

Uganda

Northern Uganda has been in the grip of a war between the Ugandan government and a rebel group called the the Lord's Resistance Army for 20 years.

Caught in the middle are civilians and their children often only 7 or 8 years old who are abducted by the LRA and terrorised into becoming child soldiers.

Ewan and Charley hear first hand accounts from Richard and Sarah, two of the many children who have brutal stories to tell of abduction, fighting, rape and eventually release or escape.

Child soldiers often spend eight years away from their families and when they return face the stigma of having fought for the rebels.

On their return they are often still regarded by their families as a rebel soldier.

UNICEF helps rehabilitate them back into their community and helps them overcome  mental and physical trauma. The process can take two years.

Ewan and Charley also deliver 'school-in-a-box' kits to Richard's school, and learn about a Catch Up Health programme.

The programme monitors nutrition, and provides malaria nets and immunisation for diseases like polio, measles, tetanus and others.

Charley delivers two polio drops but isn't up to giving an injection!
