In the second year of Community Channel's collaboration with Northern Film & Media, three documentaries have been produced in which new film makers highlight a particular aspect of their community.

  • Strangerous Pursuits
This film's subtitle is 'the making of an action hero' and it documents the last stages of Ged Watts' transformation from a mild mannered man with Down's Syndrome into the world's first learning disabled action hero.

The journey took Ged and the Shoot Your Mouth Off film team into gyms and dojos (martial arts training places) all over the country to meet martial arts practitioners and stuntmen keen to give Ged the benefit of their experience as on-screen fighters and actors.

Director Steve Carolan and crew had 2 months to bring out Ged's inner tiger in the mode of Jet Li or Tony Jaa. Strangerous Pursuits shows if the mission succeeded.

  • Same Faces, Different Stories
With the subtitle: 'Dynamics of an African family in diaspora', this film is about a father and son fighting for control and a mother who in an unobtrusive and typically African way, is firmly in control.

Anthony serves at the European Youth Parliament and hopes to become a medical doctor. His father, Jonas, who gave up his career to make sure his children achieved worthwhile goal and attained a better social status, is sceptical about his son's work.

Ged Watts
Strangerous Pursuits
Jonas insists his son should stop his youth work and concentrate on his education.  Directed and produced by Peter Kayode Adegbie.

  • From Brno to Benwell - on Sun 1 June @ 7.30 pm
This film is a portrait of Roma activist and musician Miro Simko who came to Newcastle upon Tyne to improve his life.  It shows his struggle and dedication to help not only his own family in their new life, but their community as well.

In the past two years, 1,500 Roma families from the Czech Republic have moved to Newcastle's west end.  This is a snapshot of their lives, directed by Hugh Kelly and produced by Swingbridge Video.
