Hip Hop Opera (trail)
Another senseless victim of gun crime.
Another suspect.
Another weeping mother.
This is the opening of Hip Hop Opera, a hard-hitting tale exploring the causes and effects of gun crime.
The film is a dramatisation of events leading to an outbreak of urban gun violence. It also features interviews with parents who have lost children to gun crime.
Taking inspiration from Hip Hop videos, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet and Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11, Hip Hop Opera aims to inform through drama.
It presents a tale of morality and conflict resolution and shows how confrontation can be resolved safely by compromise and respect.
Interwoven into the plot are seven pop promos, creating a contemporary ‘hip hop opera’ which is expressed in the language of its intended audience – young people.
First shown in October 2007, it is the brainchild of producer Raymond Stevenson, who was looking for a way to bring together Brixton's musical and performance artists in one project. Gun crime was the obvious subject matter.
Innovative hard hitting drama The piece formed part of The Don’t Trigger 2007 Campaign, an international anti-gun campaign, founded by UK government and corporate organisations. The campaign highlights the negative impact that gun crime can have on individuals, families and society.
It is supported by Families for Peace, MAMA, Mothers Against Violence, Mothers Against Guns Nationwide, Amnesty International and many other partner charities.
