Leicestershire is home to some spectacular rural countryside, pretty market towns and villages and an ethnically rich, modern city.

It’s a county full of contrasts – rural and urban, traditional and modern.

Over the past 20 years, Leicestershire’s population has changed dramatically as new cultural and religious communities from across the world have come to settle there.  Leicester itself has become one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the UK.

A new awards scheme has been launched to help meet the challenge to unite the community. The Leicestershire First Annual Community Awards is a charity that’s been set up to promote shared values and strengthen intercultural links. It will encourage social giving and unite communities in recognition and celebration of Leicestershire’s many achievements.

Watch two programmes on Community Channel on Tues 8 July @ 7.15 pm -

One is hosted by Martyn Lewis in which he explains the background to the awards. The second film profiles music teacher, Helen Collins, winner of the inaugural award for leading a choir from The Lancaster School in Leicester to sing at the Royal Albert Hall.  Her work was seen in the BBC Series - The Choir - Boys Don't Sing

Leicestershire First Awards will be made in nine categories:

  • Leadership
  • Young Achiever
  • Community Builder
  • Achievement in Arts and Music
  • Achievement in Sport
  • Environment
  • Volunteering
  • Courage
  • The Judge’s Special Prize

To qualify for an award, nominees will have made outstanding contributions to the arts, music or sport. Or they will have displayed remarkable acts of bravery, sacrifice and commitment to their community and environment.

Each Award-winner will be given £3000 to donate to the charity of their choice in Leicestershire.
