Bonita Ugly Bananas is a short documentary which tells the story of workers on an Ecuadorian banana plantation through the eyes of Scottish artist, Jan Nimmo.

The Los Alamos plantation is owned by Alvaro Noboa (Bonita Brands), Ecuador’s richest man, owner of the world’s 4th largest banana company and a frequent presidential candidate.

Jan was present when the workers on the Los Alamos plantation formed a union and went on strike, and through them she was able to witness the living conditions on the plantation and the company’s violent response to the strike.

Workers are exposed all day to harsh chemicals used for pesticides and are given no protective clothing. They are often sick, yet are still expected to work.

They live on the plantation - eight to a room, two to a bed, with cardboard used for mattresses. And all the families use the same horrendous bathroom.

The supervisor lives quite comfortably in a house nearby.

The film was widely used by human and labour rights activists and contributed to Alvaro Noboa's failure to win the Ecuadorian presidential elections in both 2002 and 2005.

It was broadcast on three Ecuadorian TV channels to highlight the abuses on Noboa’s plantations.
