This film profiles three people who have used volunteering opportunities to open new doors for themselves and get on in their lives and careers.  In it they share their experience of how they've gained.

Becky Butler

Becky Butler is an achiever.  She's a wheelchair user whose volunteering work as a literacy tutor at a school in Richmond upon Thames has helped her gain her academic qualifications.

Getting an MA in Children's Literature will now open up new opportunities, and at the same time the volunteering work has enabled Becky to feel she is contributing to her community.

James Isaac

Volunteering has also given James Isaac new skills.  James has learning difficulties and has been volunteering as a handyman's assistant for Age Concern for 4 years.  He's now trying to get paid work.

Richard Christie

James and Richard
Richard Christie's disability came late in life when he lost his sight at the age of 49, and was registered blind.

After volunteering for 3 years at Richmond Advice and Information Centre on Disability, Richard's now volunteering at Kew gardens and helping out a visual impairment organisation.

The experience has boosted Richard's confidence, given him new skills and enabled him to get back into the workplace after such a life-changing experience.
