Unwritten - Pt 1

In Unwritten, five British teenagers have a unique experience when they go on a two week road trip to Kenya and Uganda.

It's no holiday. They camp out, cook meals for the group, build schools, teach English, organise football matches and fun runs and meet hundreds of schoolchildren along the way.

The climax of the trip is a fun run they organise for 2,000 primary school children in Eldoret, a small town 6 hours drive north from Nairobi.

Most of them have never been outside Britain before. Some have had really difficult situations to deal with, while others have simply drifted into the wrong crowd.

John's dad died when he was 9 and he's had alcohol problems and been in trouble with the police. Craig spent 5 years in care and lacked confidence but it now training to be a youth worker.

Asha helps 16-25 year olds in Hackney to get back into education. Andy lives with his grandparents in Gloucestershire and was bullied at school. Sarah's doing three jobs between school and further education.

The trip gives them time and space to think about solutions for their problems or issues back home. Almost all return with a better understanding of themselves and a desire to make the most of every chance they get.

This annual project is organised by sports reporter Rob Walker and is arranged by London Lemmy Foundation and the Prince's Trust.
