Makutano Junction is a Kenyan-produced television drama, shown on prime time in Kenya and Uganda.

Millions regularly catch up on the latest developments, eagerly finding out about topics including HIV/AIDS, corruption, ethnic violence, new farming techniques, environmental rights and rape.

Crossing the River
This episode - Crossing the River - focuses on corruption when the residents of Makutano Junction find themselves forced to pay a 'protection fee' to the council.

The wily Dr. Washington is the character behind the extortion.  He's depicted as a witty, manipulative and corrupt official who abuses his power and position to gain money for himself.

Desperate residents get together to fight for their rights and demand their money back. They're led by Mr. Matano, a well educated and respected resident and Winston Mabuki, the owner of the popular bar.  At a big protest in the village, the issue is finally resolved.

Now in its eighth series, the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) has supported the programme from the start.
