Soul City

Now in its 14th year, Soul City is built around the li9fe of a medical clinic in a black South African township.

Set in the country which has the worst AIDS epidemicin the world, it regularly features storylines to tackle stigma, encourage condom use and overcome ignorance of how to care for those who are ill.

But it has also covered domestic violence, literacy and many other important topics.  Soul City is as well known as Coca-cola among black South Africans - a significant achievement.

HIV Prevention. Multiple Concurrent Partners
In this episode called 'HIV Prevention. Multiple Concurrent Partners', we meet a couple, Zanele and Dali, just as she discovers that her husband is having an affair with another woman.

Going against the traditional view that women must be faithful but men are allowed to have several partners, Zanele threatens to leave her husband unless he takes action.

She makes him aware of the risks of HIV infection that the affair brings with it and insists that if Dali wants her to stay, he must get himself tested.  The ultimatum tests the strength of their relationship. 

Soul City is part funded by the UK's Department for International Development (DFID).  DFID is now supporting the rollout of Soul City programmes to eight more countries across southern Africa.
