Let's Go Dancing - the People |
when is this on?
| This isn't scheduled anytime soon. |
We take three special young ice skaters behind the scenes to meet the stars of Dancing on Ice. They also learn some tips from top coach Karen Barber.
All three have some form of disability which makes ice skating more of a challenge. But it's given them new skills and boosted their self confidence.
Fatima - queen of twirls Fatima
Eight year old Fatima was born with cerebral palsy. Her disability affects her mobility. She uses an adjustable electric pink wheelchair and manages to cover the ice at quite a speed, as coach and Dancing on Ice judge Karen Barber found out!
Her advice on ice skating: "Look where you're going and twirl!". She certainly did that and had Karen Barber twirling as well!
Fatima is a newcomer to ice skating but has been to an ice skating session at the National History Museum twice. She's supported by the charity Whizz-Kidz and is an ambassador for them, writing up her experiences on their website.
Lorna comparing notes with a legend Lorna
Lorna is 13 years old and is partially sighted. She also has dyspraxia, difficulty with words. She hated sports at school until she joined the Actionnaires sports club run by Action for Blind People. The experience helped her grow in confidence and she now loves ice skating.
During the filming of Let's Go Dancing on Ice she was speechless when she met Olympic champion Christopher Dean and swapped costume tips with Dancing on Ice's Zoe Salmon.
Lorna has been ice skating a few times now, usually at Bristol Ice Rink. Dancing on Ice judge, Karen Barber, showed her some moves and she learnt how to get up from the ice safely and easily.
Lewis
Lewis won plaudits from the experts! Lewis is 16 years old and has been diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome. As the programme shows, he's a natural on ice and is even asked for some tips by Dancing on Ice star, Zoe Salmon.
He's a keen skater who likes figure skating and ice hockey. He goes to weekly Sunday sessions organised by SPICE (Special People on Ice) in Slough, where he once met Torvill and Dean.
At Dancing on Ice, he has a session with Karen Barber who's very impressed and gets to see the TV control room.
Skating has changed his life by getting him involved in a sport that he obviously excels at and has given him more confidence.
On Sunday 22 March at 9pm, see how Fatima, Lorna and Lewis get on in Let's Go Dancing on Ice on Community Channel. On Sky 539, Virgin TV, and here Online.
