New zone for the Deaf community
This month we launch the BSL zone with a new series of Wicked.  A series of five short films about mental health and dance - Mad for Dance - broadcasts on five and Community Channel.  We mark Mental Health Action week with new programmes. And Lou Bolch talks to Brian Woods and there's a chance to see his award winning documentaries.



1st - 5th April
 

Wicked - 1st April @ 8am/2pm/8pm/2am 
This weekly signed magazine show launches a new BSL (British Sign Language) zone on Community Channel. The Wicked campervan will tour the country with new, issues and events for the Deaf community.  Presented by Nathan Rollinson and Lilli Risner.

Five short films on dance and mental health
6th - 12th April

Mad for Dance - Mon 6th - Fri 10th April @ 7.30
Five short films in which five people talk openly about their experience of mental illness and show how dance has helped them overcome their condition.
  • Nabina Mon 6 April @ 7.30pm is influenced by Eastern dance to get through the highs and lows of bipolar disorder.
  • Danielle Tue 7 April @ 7.30pm has been helped by Flamenco to overcome many years of bulimia.
  • Sarah Wed 8 April @ 7.30pm turned to Modern Jive to get relief from stress which caused a psychotic episode.
  • Greg Thurs 9 April @ 7.30pm used modern dance therapy to help his addictions and OCD.
  • Emma Fri 10 April @ 7.30pm has taken to street dance to get over social anxiety disorder.

Life in the Office - Mon 13 April @ 9am/3pm/9pm
Life in the Office, The Interview, The Breakdown, and The Return are short films produced by Shift designed to encourage discussion about managing mental ill-health in the workplace. Shift is an organisation which challenges stigma and discrimination around mental ill-health.

Open Secrets - Mon 13 April @ 9.40pmA short drama looking at the stigma of mental illness in the Asian community featuring actors Saeed Jaffrey and Valmike Rampersad.

Living with Asperger's - Tue 14 April @ 9am/3pm
Following a family with 3 Asperger's sufferers this fly on the wall documentary looks at how routine activities from getting ready for school and getting caught in traffic can be very difficult for children suffering from the disability.

Out of the Shadow - Tues 14 April @ 9pm
A one hour programme which chronicles the life of a woman with schizophrenia.  A powerful documentary.


20th - 26th April

When Lou Met ... Brian Woods -
Mon 20th - Thurs 23rd April @ 9pm
Broadcaster and journalist Lou Bolch talks to acclaimed documentary maker Brian Woods about his filmmaking and what inspires his work and a chance to watch a season of his remarkable films.

  • Return to the Dying Rooms - Mon 20 April @ 9pm
    In 1995 Brian Woods and Kate Blewett uncovered the systematic neglect of abandoned babies in orphanages in China in The Dying Rooms. This film follows up.  Followed by When Lou Met Brian Woods @ 10pm.

  • China's Stolen Children - Tues 21 April @ 9pm
    A look at how China's infamous 'one child' policy led to a boom in stolen children. Followed by When Lou Met Brian Woods @ 10.30pm.

  • Slavery: A Global Investigation Wed 22 April @ 9pm
    This film explores three separate industries where slavery can still be found: the carpet industry in northern India, the cocoa industry in the Ivory Coast, and domestic slavery in Britain and the U.S. Followed by When Lou Met Brian Woods @ 10.20pm

  • Evicted - Thurs 23 April @ 9pm
    Every day, families across Britain face the frightening reality of homelessness.  This film looks at the experiences of three young girls and their families. Followed by When Lou Met Brian Woods @ 10pm.
