A worrying statistic shows that Britain's South Asian population is more at risk of coronary heart disease than others and this film looks at ways of reducing the risk. In the UK the South Asian population is up to 50% more likely to die prematurely of coronary heart disease than the rest of the population. Giving up smoking and eating a healthy diet can make a significant impact. But one of the most effective ways of preventing heaart disease is to take more exercise. This film gives practical examples of how to incorporate regular exercise into a daily routine. Jay Rashid, a walk leader, introduces us to one of his walking groups as they take to the open spaces to walk briskly for the daily quota of 30 minutes. This reduces stress and increases strength and suppleness. Ramesh Verma feels that older people are often vulnerable and they might feel isolated at home and unwilling to go out. The answer is to join a group, or even set one up, so that the exercise becomes an enjoyable social activity. Swimming groups and dancing clubs, like St. Gabriel's in Leicester, demonstrate other ways of getting healthy exercise. Despite have diabetes, high blood pressure and angina, one woman swimmer felt better because of the regular exercise. For those unable to get out of the house, one-to-one home visits by a local fitness instructor can often be arranged.
