There were 75,000 homeless young people in 2006-07, a figure which only accounts for people who accessed services in that period.  Some believe the true figure is much higher, somewhere between 200-300 thousand.

But whatever the true figure, real lives are drastically affected when young people are homeless.  In Behind No Doors Anthony, Amy, Natalie, Emily and Harley tell their stories.

All of them share their experiences of how they ended up on the streets and what it took to turn their lives around.

Family breakdown and disputes are the main trigger for young people leaving home, a move that often leads to consequences which have a major impact on their lives.

Homelessness can lead to crime. It affects young people's chances of getting training or a job and it has a big impact on mental health.

"What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger," was the idea that helped Anthony through the bad times.

Gill Hewitt of Barnado's Crashpad says that crashpad facilities like the one she offers help provide a safety net for a lot of homeless young people but its 6-week limit needs to be extended.

Keith Watts of Arch Mediation Manager believes steps can and should be taken at an earlier stage to prevent family crises leading to children leaving home.

This film is an honest account of what it feels like to be on the margins of society at an age of great vulnerability.
