The Hunger Inquest

Why are 1 billion people going hungry in a world that has never produced so much food? What is at the root of hunger – and can it be ended?

In 2009 the United Nations announced that the number of hungry people in the world had passed 1 billion (1 in every 6 people) for the first time.

This film looks at the root cause of hunger in a world of plenty. Is it due to natural causes, or is it man-made?  Can it be ended?

One expert says hunger is mostly man-made, "it's not the amount of food, but the politics of distribution" that lie at the heart of the issue.

The Hunger Inquest
made by Actionaid looks for answers to this fundamental issue of our time by visiting communities to find out why they are hungry and how they are trying, often without support, to work their way out of hunger.

Olivier de Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Raj Patel, author of ‘Stuffed and Starved’ and Judi Wakhungu, co-chair of the International Assessment of Agricultural Science Technology for Development (IAASTD) are some of the experts delving into this important issue.
