Over the Border

In 1981 around 1,600 people lived in the St. Hilda’s area of Middlesbrough. By 2009 only 12 houses were occupied.

In Over the Border, two of the remaining families tell their story of fighting for survival and feeling they've been left in limbo.

They struggle to come to terms with the collapse of Middlesbrough's oldest community and the uncertainty of their future.

Their neighbours' houses are being bulldozed to the ground and they are unable to find out why they are being forced to leave.

Feeling neglected and cheated, the two families highlight the negative effect that ‘regeneration’ can have on a community.

This project was part of Northern Film & Media's Capture 2009 scheme, which supports films inspired by communities and people in the North East of England.

Capture 2009 is a partnership between Northern Film & Media, Community Channel and Channel 4's FourDocs.
