Surviving History tells the stories of seven people who miraculously survived the Holocaust in Lithuania — once known as the Jerusalem of the North — where 95 per cent of the Jewish population was killed.
Lithuanian holocaust survivor Routes of escape were few, and those who survived only did so by joining the partisans or army, or by fleeing to Russia.
Others stayed alive only thanks to kind neighbours who hid them in their basements or attics, others because they managed to slip unnoticed through a hole in the ghetto gate or by crawling through rat infested sewers, and a few by somehow lasting in the camps until liberation.
The survivors featured in this moving film all lost members of their family.
Even today, these individuals face echoes of the past, with Neo-Nazis continuing to march through their city, and their Jewish community centre being defaced with images of Swastikas, smokestacks and gallows.
The film shares their experiences and memories.
Part of our programmes to mark Holocaust Memorial Day - 27 January, the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
