Ho Ea Rona (We Are Going Forward) |
In this film, we eavesdrop on four young men who have 'come out' about being HIV positive and how they are learning to live with the consequences at home, in their social life and in relationships. Meet Bimbo, Thabiso, Thabo and Moalosi and get an idea of what life is like for them in Lesotho, a country unable to face up to the scale of HIV/AIDS. Over ‘braai’, a pork barbecue, the four recount their experiences. Bimbo says he was the first person to declare his status publicly and did so on national TV. “Being HIV positive, doesn’t mean that life is over,” he says, but he doesn’t underestimate the challenges they all face. “There are times when I think my life would be easier if I had kept quiet,” he adds. All three say having a relationship is a challenge. Moalosi describes a poignant scene when he was rejected by a potential girlfriend once she knew he was infected. And Bimbo’s relationship with his girlfriend broke up when he told people he was HIV positive. Despite their difficulties, they’re brought together by a common desire to ‘demystify’ HIV/AIDS in Lesotho. Their closeness, their support for each other and their humour dispel the myth that living with HIV is all doom and gloom. They are true role models. ‘Ho Ea Rona – We Are Going Forward’ was made by Dumisani Phakathi, and is part of a series of challenging films on HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa by Steps for the Future, a collaboration between Day Zero Productions and YLE TV2 Finland.
