Cause Celeb: Richard Blackwood
Cause Celeb: Richard BlackwoodTo mark this year’s World AIDS Day we’re screening a special edition of Cause Celeb, the series looking at celebrities and their charities. Comedian and TV presenter Richard Blackwood tells us why he is passionate about the charity BODY & SOUL. This charity supports children, teenagers, women and heterosexual men and their families who are living with or affected by HIV and AIDS. They provide emotional support, treatment information and workshops addressing the issues relating to HIV and AIDS.

Richard Blackwood got involved with BODY & SOUL four years ago after the charity approached his agent. He was intrigued by the charity as he hadn’t heard of them before, "My manager said there are many organisations that want your support and she mentioned BODY & SOUL. She told me it was to do with people with HIV especially young kids.

I’m convicted to what I’m doing because you haven’t heard of these people - but you’ve heard of what it is that they’re dealing with."

Cause Celeb: Richard Blackwood BODY & SOUL was set up as there was no support for children living with HIV. Richard Blackwood meets ten-year old John who has HIV and whose father died from the condition. John goes to the 'Base' - a support group run by the charity especially for 10–12 year old children affected with HIV and AIDS. The group provides a safe haven where children can talk freely about living with HIV and the fears that a young child may have.

John says of his experience, "It helps you forget why you’re having to drink tablets all the time. We play football, do drawing and sometimes just chilling."

BODY & SOUL also offers a weekly support group for teenagers called 'Teen Spirit'. Catherine is a member of Teen Spirit and is now able to talk about the fact that her mother passed away from AIDS and her young sister is living with HIV. She says, "Because of the stigma around HIV you can’t really sit there and have a conversation 'cos people will always have something bad to say like 'Oh I’m going to catch it if I kiss the person'. Coming to BODY & SOUL solves that problem because you can talk about it."
