In this one-off Community Channel special, inspired volunteers share their experiences and tell us how they are making a difference in their communities by helping to make them bloom from the ground up! They’ll show us how we can all get up off the sofa and stuck into some soil! At the St Alban’s charity, 'Earthworks', Raymond Gibbins and Viv Marshall are two of the volunteers who are growing alongside people with learning difficulties. For Ray, the experience has shown him how much fun he can have and how much he can learn from the kind of people he had never even spent any time with before. “I think the best thing about coming here is that my life has always been about take, take, take and money, money, money and just giving a little bit here you seem to be given ten times back in just the basic joys” he said. The Rainbow Garden in Hull is the story of how one woman’s dream of turning a derelict piece of land into a horticultural haven for the local community became a reality through sheer hard work and determination. Jeannie Webster, with the help of volunteers along the way, has spent seven years creating a garden where young and old alike can come and enjoy a little bit of nature in the midst of an urban estate. “From the very first day we relied on volunteers, including myself”, says Jeannie. “I’m not an expert in gardening, but we all deserve nice things, no matter where we live”. We’ll see how hundreds of eager National Trust volunteers took part on a project on the hills of Snowdonia and we also join the BBC Gardener’s World team as they visit some pioneer Neighbourhood Gardeners. Every one of our green-fingered guides, who are have-a-go gardeners of all levels and abilities, will show you how you can grow from being a couch potato into a horticultural hero in your own community. So tune-in, become inspired and create your own oasis!
