Against the Trade Trap

In April 2005, 10 million people from 80 countries took part in the Global Week of Action for Trade Justice. The campaigners had one message: Stop 'free trade'.

It was one of the biggest protests against the inequalities of international trade which contributes to keeping millions of people trapped in poverty.

Against the Trade Trap explains the issues behind so-called 'free trade' and how it is affecting the developing world.

Case studies from Ghana, South Africa, Bangladesh and Honduras show how 'free trade' serves the developed countries who are the power behind international trade rules, and ruins the livelihoods and communities in some of the poorest countries of Africa, Central America and Asia.

It shows how rich countries are not implementing free trade when it is not in their national interests, while forcing poor countries to adhere to free trade and open up their domestic markets.  As the film says: in practice, one rule for the rich and one rule for the poor.

Bangladeshi workerThe growth of the 'trade justice' movement shows that people around the globe are committed to putting pressure on the rich governments and the key global institutions responsible for the current trade inequalities.

They not only want to show solidarity with the 850 million people who go to bed hungry every night, but also want to bring about change so that developing countries can get a fair deal and that trade starts to work in their favour.
