Jon Snow Interviews... Lenny Henry |
when is this on?
| This isn't scheduled anytime soon. |
Channel 4 News anchor Jon Snow talks to four inspiring people including Lenny Henry, in a new series of Jon Snow Interviews for digital TV station Community Channel.
Made to mark Year of the Volunteer 2005, the series talks to extraordinary people who devote their time and energy to others and is designed to inspire people to get involved with volunteering and other issues raised in the interviews.
Lenny Henry talks about his work as one of the major faces of Comic Relief.
“It shows what happens when everyone gets together,” he says. “I volunteer by communicating to the camera and making simple analogies. People walk 10 miles to get water in parts of Africa – that’s the equivalent of walking from Dudley to Birmingham! Facts like that make it easier for the audience to understand.”
Henry says he still enjoys doing Comic Relief after 20 years, and loves reporting back to the British public about the problems in Africa.
He hinted he might want to get into a more political role in due course. “In the future, I want to be even more useful than I am now,” he revealed.
Lenny also describes how his old manager encouraged him to volunteer as a 16 year-old and his work as patron of the Sickle Cell Society, the blood disorder that affects black people. Interestingly, we hear how his altruistic side comes from his mum’ side. She lost both her legs through diabetes in the latter stages of her life but still threw herself out in the community, collecting money from her wheelchair. “Giving time and energy is really important", according to Lenny.
