Forests on the Frontline

when is this on?

This isn't scheduled anytime soon.

In his firsthand report, Forests on the Frontline, actor Kris Marshall travels into the heart of the Bolivian Amazon to investigate the impact the destruction of the rainforest is having on local communities.

Well known for his part in the BBC TV comedy, My Family, Kris takes on a new role as a reporter trying to unearth the real story behind the struggle for land in the rainforest.

Into the Bolivian Amazon
Once the greatest area of dense vegetation and virgin forest on earth, the Amazon rainforest is being changed forever. Dramatic deforestation is cutting a swathe right through the Amazon Basin. Loggers hack deep into the forest, while ranchers clear large blocks for their herds.

This has long been the story from Brazil, but in Bolivia it’s relatively new.

From forest to grazing land
Inaccessibility and poor roads had protected the rainforest, but that’s changing fast. In the poorest country in South America, profiting from hardwood and beef seems more important than protecting the environment.

Experts warn that destroying the rainforest accelerates climate change, increasing the incidence of drought and extreme weather conditions around the globe.

Kris Marshall witnesses first hand the large scale clearance cutting to make way for the cattle farms. He hears reports of ranchers often just moving in and ‘grabbing’ large pieces of land for themselves at the expense of indigenous communities.

He talks to campaigners who are fighting to raise awareness of the issue and to promote sustainable development projects which don’t threaten the forest.

Back in London Kris talks to a leading expert in the field of climate change about the implications of the felling of the rainforest – both for Bolivia and for the world as a whole.

Forests on the Frontline is a  Christian Aid Production.
