Jono & Oli Save the World |
|
I'm Oli, and Oli Saves the World is my own personal attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from my community. To do this I have hooked up with Jono, hence the revised title, Jono & Oli Save the World, and we have launched our website.
In 2006, it was an ambitious target! As we set our strategy for 2007, it's still an ambitious target. But we don’t plan to take on this challenge by ourselves.
For the last three years I have been working with local groups on the environmental impact of our actions. Things like promoting local food and home energy efficiency. Now we want to tackle sustainability at home.
Come with us on our journey by watching our monthly video blogs.
Our first video took us by surprise. So, in it you see some of the mental cogs moving as we consider our plan to save the world. In our second video Jono starts measuring the energy and water he uses daily to calculate how much he can save. Excuse the dressing gown!
In our third video we're at Colchester Green Fair peddling our ideas. In our fourth video we join an amazing group at the Stop Climate Chaos rally in Trafalgar Square.
We've been reflecting on our actions in 2006, and now in our fifth video, we're setting our targets, doing energy audits and getting our eco teams together.

More About Jono & Oli Save the World
Low carbon transport Using Global Action Plan's "Eco Teams" we are planning to set up a series of small local groups (6-8 households) that will monitor their waste, energy, water, what they buy and how they travel. The overall aim is to reduce their environmental impact and in turn affect the rate of climate change.
For example, recently I was sitting in my bath wondering about the volume of lovely clean drinking water I was wasting. Spurred into action I jumped up and promptly began to empty my bath into whatever containers I could find.
A few hours later and a couple of calculations I had deduced that if I had showered instead of taking my 99-litre bath I could have saved the 0.075kWh of energy it required to clean and pump my bath water to my house.
Low food mile diet with local mussels Doesn’t sound like a lot but how many of the 60 million people in the UK like to have a bath? If we all made this choice just once a month the figure for energy saving works out to 4.5million kWh – that is a lot!
So this is what Jono and Oli plan to do. We are going to look at the world we live in and show that by each doing our little bit we can help to save the world.
We also work with two local groups - en-form (Colchester Environmental Information Centre) and Chelmsford Environmental Partnership - check out their sites for useful information.
