Save Spodden Valley

Save Spodden Valley is a community based campaign group committed to the safe  regeneration of the Spodden Valley in Rochdale, North-west England.

This picturesque valley in the foothills of the Pennines was once home to the world’s first, and largest asbestos textile factory. Countless people have lost their lives to asbestos related cancers and other diseases as a result of the products and decisions made in the Spodden Valley.

In early 2004, property speculators purchased the 72 acre factory site with a view to developing the land.  The campaign was born.

Follow this story through our monthly online videoblog.

The first video goes to the heart of the problem and shows how the land is still contaminated by asbestos and how asbestos in 2006 is still killing thousands of people in Britain each year.

More About Save Spodden Valley Campaign

At dawn, on the weekend of 15 May 2004 dozens of forestry workers began to destroy woodlands in the Spodden Valley surrounding the former asbestos factory.

The sound of those chainsaws woke a whole town up. The ‘Save Spodden Valley’ campaign was born.

The campaign has received cross-party support at Council, Westminster and European levels. Groups and organisations from Britain, Europe and beyond have offered help and support.

We need your help - in return we want to ensure the pitfalls we face and successes we achieve are published to help empower other communities and campaigns.
